Portugal / Nutmeg

The use of nutmeg has been found dating back to 3,500 BCE. Used for trade in the 1300’s by the Arabs who closely guarded the secret of its source, it’s hidden isle was discovered in 1511 by a Portuguese expedition sent to try and take hold of the spice trade. These early sailors purportedly smelled the spice in the air of the Banda Sea, Indonesia before seeing the string of emerald islands.

Nutmeg can be found in various spice blends from all over the world, from Chinese five spice, India’s garam masala, French quatre epice, Middle Eastern baharat to American Apple pie spice and Coca Cola.
