Songkran International Day | Chiang Mai, Thailand

Songkran is Thailand’s most beloved annual celebration marking the traditional New Year each April 13-15th. The name Songkran means “the passing of the sun into a new zodiac sight” and there is a deep spiritual significance to the holiday. People visit temples to offer food to monks, listen to dharma teachings, and pray. Water is poured over the hands of Budha and elders as a sign of respect and to ask for blessings. Water is the festival’s defining symbol — representing purification, washing away of the previous year’s misfortunes and a fresh start. Streets erupt with joyful water fights, strangers and neighbors alike being doused.
