Semana Santa, Spain
Semana Santa (Holy Week) originated in the 16th century. One of Spain’s most spectacular and deeply rooted traditions, it is observed in the week leading up to Easter Sunday. Celebrated all over Spain, the festivities in Seville are considered the most elaborate and emotionally powerful in the world. The centerpiece of the celebrations is the processions where ornate floats called pasos are carried on the shoulders of bearers called costaleros. The streets are filled with the haunting sounds of drums and brass bands, and the air is filled with incense. More than just a religious event, Semana Santa is a cultural experience that blends faith, art, music, and community.
