
King’s Day (Koningsdag) | The Netherlands
Honoring the birth of King Willem-Alexander(April 27) this massive holiday is a celebration of National unity and pride. Originally started as “Princess Day” in 1885, it evolved into Queen’s Day for several monarchs before becoming King’s Day in 2014 when Willem-Alexander took the throne. Known for Oranjegekte (orange craze) citizens wear orange cloths, wigs, and face paint to show loyalty to The House of Orange-Nassau, the reigning royal house of the Netherlands who have played a central role in Dutch history since William the Silent, Prince of Orange, led the revolt against Spain in the 16th century. Originating from the German House of Nassau, it became a prominent Dutch dynasty through marriage and heritage, before becoming a monarchy in 1815.
Festivities include canal boat parties, parades, street concerts, tulip festivals, and nationwide, tax-free flea markets
