Lazarim Carnival

The Lazarim Carnival, held in the tiny village of Lazarim in northern Portugal, is a pre-Lenten celebration and an important part of Portuguese tradition. Lazarim is known for its hand-carved masks which are works of art carved by artisans who have past down the craft from father to son. The masks, made out of Alder wood, vary in shapes with impressive details that make each one unique and help create the mood of the festival, incorporating humorous and satirical elements.
The masks are worn by Careto characters who are dressed in colorful costumes who parade through the village accompanied by a marching drum band. The Careto tradition is a folk ritual that is believed to have prehistoric roots in Celtic traditions. The four-day festival ends with feijoada e caldo de farinha, a traditional corn and flour soup.
