Chili peppers

Spain / Chili

Wild Capsicum is thought to have been a part of human diets since 7.500 BC. Originating in the Bolivia/Peru area of South America, the seeds were originally thought to be spread through the Americas by birds who are unaffected by the heat of these spicy fruits. The earliest signs of the cultivation of pepper have been found in Mexico dating back 6,000 years.

Chili did not reach Europe until the Portuguese and Spanish explorers came to the Americas and brought back peppers along with corn, beans, and squash.

The punchy heat Chili brings to food, Chili is also used in pepper sprays for self defense. Chili has been found to be effective in treating chronic pain syndrome, has many antimicrobial properties, has anti-cancer effects, hypoglycemic effects, treatment in hypertension and anti-obesity. The Nobel Prize winning study of how peppers heat produces pain in the body lead to a study of how humans feel pain and lead to advances in pain management.
