Hanami | Japan

One of Japan’s most cherished traditions, Hanami “flower viewing” dates back to the Nara period (710-794 AD) when courtiers would gather breath blooming plum trees to appreciate their fleeting beauty. Rooted in the Japanese philosophy of mono no aware, over time the focus shifted to cherry blossoms (Sakura) which became a symbol of renewal, the transient nature of life, and the beauty of impermanence. Between late March and early May millions of people flock to parks, riverbanks and temple grounds to picnic underneath these canopies of pale pink and white blossoms. The festivities are accompanied by an abundance of food and drink -turning the act of sitting outdoors into a full sensory and emotive celebration.Because the cherry blossoms only bloom for about two weeks each year, Hanami carries a bittersweet quality, reminding those who gather that beauty, like life is most meaningful because of its fleetingness.
